Lymphatic drainage is accomplished by gentle, rhythmic massage following the direction of lymlymph. drainph flow. Lymph is the plasma-like fluid that maintains the body’s fluid balance and removes bacteria. Mild stretching movements are used on the walls of lymph collectors to redirect the flow away from blocked areas into other vessels that drain into the veins. Lymphatic drainage is said to beneficially effect the nervous, immune and muscular systems. hormonebalancing

Benefits

Relieves hot flashes
Improves emotional state
Helps with fatigue, forgetfulness, insomnia
Improves sex drive

More about Hormone Balancing Program

Hormonal imbalances can cause mood swings, hot flashes, weight gain, night sweats, fatigue, forgetfulness, insomnia, thinning hair and loss of sex drive.Hormone levels decrease naturally as we age, but can also be affected by chronic stress, imbalanced diet and environmental factors. As with all forms of preventative medicine, our approach is to treat people on all the levels that they are affected: mentally, emotionally and physically. By incorporating a healthy diet, supplements, herbs and lifestyle counseling, many women make a smoother transition to menopause, and men to andropause. For some, the transition continues to be difficult and they are finding relief and a return to their old selves with the use of physician monitored natural hormone therapy and naturopathic diet and supplement therapy.Natural hormones are also referred to as bio-identical hormones (BHRT) because they are biologically identical to your own. The way that natural hormones are used and prescribed makes them vastly different from the synthetic hormones that were studied and found problematic by the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) of 2002. Natural hormones are prescribed only after a thorough medical exam and blood work shows that a patient has low hormone levels and is a good candidate for the therapy. The patient continues to be monitored and dosages are adjusted as needed to provide a customized solution with minimized risk. The hormones that are most often prescribed are: estriol (the weakest form of estrogen), progesterone, testosterone and thyroid hormone.Equally important in the health of the menopausal woman and andropausal man is their own participation in the health process. The following are dietary guidelines that will improve your quality of life and hormonal health.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points shown to be safe and effective in treating specific health problems. Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theory of the flow of Qi (Vital Energy) and Xue (Blood) through distinct meridians or pathways in the body somewhat like the distributions of nerves and blood vessels. According to ancient theory, acupuncture is used to regulate and harmonize the free flow of Qi throughout the body. In Chinese, there is a saying, There is no pain if there is a free flow of Qi; if there is pain, there is no free flow of Qi.

Iyengar Yoga is a form of alignment – based Hatha Yoga that was created by B.K.S. Iyengar (1918 – 2014) of Pune, India. Postures are introduced systematically to improve mobility, stability, strength and alignment. Eventually they include standing poses, forward bends, backbends, twists, inversions and restorative poses. The intense concentration draws the attention inward to calm and center the mind. Equipment such as blocks, belts and chairs are used to create awareness and stability in the posture. All students are welcome.

Imago pic
Imago Couples Therapy, is based on the work of Dr Harville Hendrix.

Basic Weekend Workshop – You will learn powerful skills that can radically transform your relationship
May 27.28 and 29 2016

Individual Weekend Workshop- a deep look at your own relationship issues.

What is Imago Therapy ?

When we fall in love it is an amazing thing. The world is a wonderful place and we are fully alive and connected as a couple. It is almost magical.

All too often these magical feelings seem to disappear into frustration and conflict. Before we know it we are in a relationship of diminished passion and connection. We no longer feel cherished. Perhaps boredom and frustration zap what energy we do have. Communication ends in deadlock, or even worse, pain. We seek out marriage counseling.

IMAGO is a proven couples/ relationship therapy that restores relationships back to energetic connection, passion and hope. The tools of IMAGO are like a treasure often providing important immediate relief for the struggling couple. Understanding occurs and problems are actually resolved and dissolved through the flagship tool of structured Dialogue.

Marriages become relaxed and joyful as day to day connection is experienced even amidst the stresses of life. The powerful bond between the couple creates a sacred space for healing and transformative growth. The trained IMAGO coach gently holds the couple as they find their way back to the impulses of the romantic days and helps them solidify their vision for the future.

reflexology

Reflexology is the natural healing art based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands, and ears, which correspond to every part, gland, and organ of the body.  We work primarily on the feet, however hands and ears may be included in a session. In reflexology, wee apply specific pressure using thumb, finger and hand techniques.  The specific process in reflexology reduces tension, improves circulation and promotes the natural functioning of the related areas of the body.

What Happens in a Session?

The client is generally lying down or slightly inclined in a comfortable position.  The reflexologist works on either the feet, hands or ear. Sessions usually last from 45 – 60 minutes.  Beginning with the right side, all reflex points on both sides are stimulated as the body is considered to be a whole unit. The feet feel lighter and the client tends to feel calmer and more at ease after a session.  Reflexology is safe for everyone, although pressure and length of session may vary for babies, the aged or extremely ill.

Aromatherapy is the art and science of using essential oils for improving
and maintaining health and beauty. It is a gentle but effective method to balance body, mind and spirit.
An aromatherapist utilizes essential oils to enable the body’s natural healing process. As an aromatherapist, one is professionally trained in the properties of application and contra-indications of essential oils.

What Happens in a Session?

The client and aromatherapist confer together and discuss possible symptoms and discomforts to focus on, in the session. The aromatherapist creates an aromatic blend of pure essential oils to use in a gentle aromatherapy massage session. The entire body is massaged to provide a deep relaxation and destress the body. The essential oil blend works well on continuing the effects of a massage session for up to 48hrs, depending on what essential oils are utilized.
In the aromatherapy sessions with Monika Meulman, the client receives the created blend to use for home therapy, ongoing daily and weekly self care, as well as detailed protocol to follow up with personal aromatic healing.

Benefits of the Alexander Technique:Vistoria Heart
* Alleviates aches and pains
* Improves postural issues
* Addresses or prevents repetitive strain injuries
* Decreases stress, fatigue and anxiety
* Eases breathing and vocal issues
* Enhances performance skills (artists and athletes)
* A life-long skill!
The Alexander Technique is a gentle “hands-on” process that strengthens the mind-body connection.

From birth, we are shaped by countless factors in our everyday lives.  By the time we reach adulthood, we have acquired unconscious habits and undue tensions that can affect our state of health.  By increasing self-awareness and conscious control over our automatic responses, we can gain a greater sense of well being, both physically and mentally.

A typical lesson is taught individually, using simple movements, such as sitting and walking, as well as lying down work; all designed to help the student experience a lighter, more balanced alignment.

Through the Alexander Technique we can learn more about ourselves and how to improve our relationship with our environment.  Your goal may be to alleviate pain due to stress, to prevent work-related injury or simply to use your mind and body more efficiently.  By developing a keener ability to adapt to the demands of the modern world, we give ourselves the opportunity to live fuller, healthier lives.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is the oldest, continually practiced medicine in existence. It is one of the two main types of comprehensive medical systems used around the globe along with Western Biomedicine. Although seen as an alternative to many people in the western hemisphere, it is considered traditional and the standard medicine practiced in many Asian countries. TCM is becoming more and more recognized and regulated outside of Asia and is one of the most integrated healing systems. Modern TCM has 4 main modalities: Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy, Tuina and Diet/Lifestyle counselling. However, in the west this medicine is often called Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Herbal medicine includes substances from the plant, animal, and mineral kingdoms. Historical records on its use date back more than 2,000 years. There are over 1800 medicinals documented along with thousands of herbal formulas and combinations. Substances have been used in the form of decoctions, pills, powders, infusions, liquors, steams, washes, liniments, boluses and oils throughout history. Because of the diversity of climates in China and the plagues and pestilences it has endured throughout its history, herbal prescriptions have been developed for all the varied ailments known to humankind. Herbal medicine is very safe if prescribed by a qualified practitioner without the adverse/side effects commonly experienced using pharmaceuticals. Also, herbal medicine stimulates the body’s ability to produce what is needed to maintain homeostasis (balance) rather than replacing vital substances synthetically.

Homeopathy is a form of holistic medicine used by over 200 million people worldwide to treat both acute and chronic conditions. It is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’ – in other words, a substance taken in small amounts will cure the same symptoms it causes if it was taken in large amounts.

Homeopathic medicines are manufactured using a process combining serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking). Homeopathic medicines are perfectly safe to use for babies, children and pregnant or breastfeeding women, who are under the supervision of a medically-qualified practitioner.

Reiki is a Japanese healing art that was developed by Dr Usui in Japan in the early 20th century. It is pronounced ray-key.
A Reiki practitioner aims to change and balance the energy fields in and around your body to help on a physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual level.
Reiki is a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above a person, with the goal of facilitating the person’s own healing response.

The Japanese word Reiki means universal energy. Eastern medicine systems work with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to well being. The energy is known as ‘Ki’ in Japan, ‘Chi’ in China and ‘prana’ in India.

Reiki isn’t part of any type of religion or belief system. It is best described as a hands on healing used as a complementary therapy.
Reiki is based on an Eastern belief in an energy that supports the body’s innate or natural healing abilities.
Reiki has been studied for a variety of conditions, including pain, anxiety, fatigue, and depression.
——-

What is the status of the research?

Research into Reiki is just beginning. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health <https://nccih.nih.gov/> (NCCIH) of the National Institutes of Health <http://www.nih.gov/> (NIH) has completed five studies looking at Reiki’s ability to benefit people with diabetes, advanced AIDS, prostate cancer, fibromyalgia, and stress.

Other published studies have looked at the effect of Reiki on measures of stress hormones, blood pressure, heart rate, and immune responsivity, and on subjective reports of anxiety <http://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/conditions/anxiety>, pain anddepression <http://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/conditions/anxiety>. The studies to date are typically small, and not every study is well designed. However, overlapping data from some of the stronger studies support the ability of Reiki to reduce anxiety and pain, and suggest its usefulness to induce relaxation, improve fatigue and depressive symptoms, and strengthen overall wellbeing <http://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/glossary/3#term45>.

Reiki has been increasingly offered as part of workplace wellness programs to address burnout and improve skills in healthcare and other industries, as well as in university wellness centers.

Registered Dietitian

As a society we have spent decades trying to lose weight. In the process, we have lost a sense of what normal eating is. As individuals, we also lost a sense of identity, trying to be someone else. We have punished our bodies with diets, exercise regimes, and negative self-talk, trying to force our bodies to fit into smaller sizes. Research shows that the more we diet the more weight we gain and the more unhealthy our eating becomes. So I invite you to give up dieting, to take a look at your relationship with food, and to start taking care of your body.

I am a Registered Dietitian with a passion for helping you find a way of eating that will support your health and well-being. I provide nutrition therapy and counselling for variety of health conditions where nutrition plays an important role. I specialize in the treatment of eating disorders, disordered eating, chronic dieting, weight cycling (yo-yo effect) and weight concerns. In my work, I use a non-dieting weight-neutral approach known as Health at Every Size®. I help my clients re-learn to trust their bodies based on principles of Intuitive Eating.

I have a Bachelor degree in Nutrition and Food and a Master’s degree in Nutrition Communication from Ryerson University. Following my education I completed a year-long hospital-based dietetic internship at University Health Network in Toronto. I am licensed by the College of Dietitians of Ontario and affiliated with Dietitians of Canada.

When I do not wear my dietitian hat, I am a mom, an avid cook, and a bookworm. I love to travel, do yoga, and sit on my balcony. In a nutshell, that’s pretty much it.

Declining hormone levels can cause mood swings, hot flashes, weight gain, night sweats, fatigue, forgetfulness, insomnia, thinning hair and loss of sex drive.  Hormone levels decrease naturally as we age, but can also be affected by chronic stress, imbalanced diet and environmental factors.   For some, the transition to menopause and andropause is difficult because you might not know what hormone imbalance you have.   And let’s face it, hormones are confusing!  Is it adrenal fatigue from years of surviving on caffeine and pushing yourself too hard?  Are you waking up regularly at 2:00 am or 4:00 am from too much cortisol? Or is it too little progesterone?  Are the years of PMS and estrogen dominance now keeping you from losing weight?  Could it be your thyroid is underactive or overactive?   The key to hormone balancing is to understand what the imbalance is and how to correct it.  Oftentimes, you could have more than one imbalance since hormones work in synergy with one another.

Many women and men are finding relief and a return to their old selves with the use of a naturopathic approach to treating their hormone imbalance. As with all forms of effective preventative medicine, the best approach is to treat people on all the levels that they are affected: mentally, emotionally and physically.   In my practice I utilize a customized treatment plan that includes a healthy hormone diet, Bowen therapy and specific herbs and supplements (prescribed based on lab testing and a comprehensive physical exam), to help manage the transition to menopause and andropause.

Equally important in the health of the menopausal woman and andropausal man, is one’s own participation in the health process. The following are dietary guidelines that will improve your quality of life and hormonal health.

·         Eat plenty of vegetables, especially broccoli, cauliflower, kale and collard greens.

·         Choose organic fruits, vegetables and hormone and antibiotic free animal products to reduce your exposure to xenoestrogens.

  • Add beans and high fiber whole grains like oat bran, buckwheat, quinoa, and brown rice.
  • Eliminate refined and processed food.
  • Eliminate fried foods.  Fried foods place an additional burden on the liver.
  • Reduce sugar intake as it suppresses the immune system.

Like Shiatsu, Tui Na uses rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, as well as a variety of techniques that manipulate and lubricate the joints. Like acupressure, Tui Na directly affects the flow of energy by holding and pressing the body at acupressure points. One of Tui Na’s advantages over simple massage is its ability to focus on specific problems, especially chronic pain associated with the muscles, joints, and skeletal system. It’s especially effective for joint pain (such as arthritis), sciatica, muscle spasms, and pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. It also helps chronic conditions such as insomnia, constipation, headaches (including migraines), and the tension associated with stress.

Tui Na does not simply work on the muscles, bones, and joints. It works with the energy of the body at a deeper level. As the practitioner senses the client’s body with her hands, she is able to assess the distribution of energy and affect its flow.

As with other styles of Asian bodywork, Tui Na is designed to prevent problems, not just correct them. By keeping the body’s energy in balance, health is maintained. This is true not just for physical health, but for mental and emotional well-being as well.

Tui Na, which dates back to 1700 BC, is the parent of most modern Asian bodywork forms.

More about Art and Play Program with Sensitive Children

The intention for these sessions is to help the child to relax and experience a focused state of mind. We use different creative activities to facilitate this experience. Based on child’s natural inclinations and talents we choose one or more forms of art – painting; puppet making; drama; writing; pantomime; dance or photography – to create a piece of art. Throughout the process of creation the child is gently guided to express his/her emotions and thoughts. Then we define an appropriate format where this piece of art can be shared with an audience.

More about Mandala Art Therapy

Creating a Soul Mandala or a Healing Mandala is a way of getting in touch with ourselves and the world on more subtle level. When was the last time you felt inspired? Or when was the last time you felt really relaxed? Are you in touch with this incredible power in you – your own creativity? Do you trust your gut feeling? In the workshop and classes we work with the chakra system and body awareness, breath, movement, colour, symbol and sound. The intention is to move to a happier and more deeply satisfying state of balance and harmony. While you do not need artistic talent to create a Mandala you might be pleasantly surprised to see what happens when your creativity is unlocked.
